Apex: Steel Structures

Our Production Process

Apex Steel Structures estimating team have over 150 years of combined experienced knowledge of the industry to provide an estimate and programme that are both sound and competitive; and where necessary use their expertise to advise the client to guarantee the best results are achieved.

As part of our sustainable commitment to minimising wastage and transport costs to the environment, our Estimating Department are trained in the use of our bespoke StruMIS Management System – nesting material to maintain responsible procurement.

One of our key qualities is the accuracy and quality of all Manufacturing output.  The process begins in our Design and Detailing department. Using the latest computerised technology software such as StruCad, AutoCAD, GraiTec, MaterSeries & StuMIS Management Systems we can propose the Value Engineered alternatives to connection design, member weights, manufacturing lead in and installation programme.

Being fully integrated with our fabrication facility enables our experience detailers to make responsive changes where necessary, while at all times having complete control and clarity. To reduce installation duration we promote ‘Off Site’ solutions wherever possible – as such our production teams are in constant liaison with our designers to make key decisions.

We promote a line of constant communication with our clients during all phases of manufacturing. Our 3D modelling software offers our customers the chance to ‘walk through’ structures prior to fabrication – another process we promote to achieve a perfect  product. Timescales for production and wastage are also optimised in this way – ensuring a greater workshop capacity and swiftness of distribution to our client.

From a 21,000sq ft production facility in Canvey Island, Essex, Apex Steel Structures Ltd has the ability to service our clients Nationwide.

Continued investment ensures the company's fabrication base utilizes the industry's most technologically advanced computer controlled machinery – all fully integrated with our design department.

Our continual growth has been determined by the ability to ensure a balance between product quality and the capacity for high production volumes necessary to participate in major structural projects.

Apex Steel Structures are proud to utilise within their facility all the latest technology available from the world's leading supplier of steel fabrication equipment allowing us to tackle the countries most complex engineering challenges.

Apex employs a skilled workforce of platers, welders and paint sprayers and can manufacture steelwork to the demands of any specification. The whole of the manufacturing process is closely managed, to exact specified criteria, by our extensive quality control systems. This assures accuracy of manufacture and that steelwork deliveries are sequenced in accordance with programme demands.

Our Quality & Environmental Management Systems meet the industry
standard BS EN ISO 9001: 2000 and BS EN ISO 14001: 2004.

Our Welding Quality Management System and Factory Production Control System meet the industry standard ISO 3834-2:2005 and
BS EN 1090-1:2009 respectfully.

Apex Steel Structures employ a highly experienced and skilled workforce fully trained in Health and Safety best practice. Before the company begin their own site work a Method Statement is developed which includes a detailed description of how the work is to be carried out, together with the necessary Risk Assessments. All erectors are fully informed and committed to the Method Statement before they work on site.

In addition to all sector specific training such a LUCAS Entry Permits, Substation & Confined Spaces Certificates, the company ensures all
erectors are CITB & CSCS (Construction Skills Certificate Scheme) certified, together with IPAF, PASMA, Slinger/Banksman and Asbestos Awareness training and certification.

All stages from design inception to practical completion are controlled by a knowledgeable  & committed management team with over 350 years practical experience combined. Each member of management teams holds SMSTS certificates and are continually refreshed in the latest H&S legislation.

Each project is assigned a dedicated management team, including Project Manager, Health & Safety Advisor, Production Programmer and Site Supervisor. The commitment, speed of response and availability of advise of our management are often reasons for return custom and recommendation.

Construction products which fall within the scope of a harmonised European Standard should now carry CE marking under the EU Construction Products Regulation. This is a legal minimum requirement for all manufactured products sold within the EU Market. For all fabricated structural steel components, the harmonised standard is BS EN 1090-1 Execution of steel structures and aluminium structures: Requirements for conformity assessment of structural components. Apex complies with all CE marking requirements of this Standard, including designs to BS EN 1993 (Eurocode 3) and external certification of its factory production controls by an approved body – BM Trada. A fundamental requirement of CE marking to BS EN 1090 is the implementation of an appropriate Welding Quality Management System (WQMS) to BS EN ISO 3834. Expert auditors from Sandberg Ltd have approved the suitability of Apex’s WQMS and certified the business accordingly to undertake welded fabrication work up to Execution Class 2 (EXC2). Although each project should be considered individually, EXC2 will be appropriate for the majority of buildings constructed in the UK and is the default class when unspecified (EN 1090-2 Clause 4.1.2). Apex have been audited and approved by BM Trada to carry out the following:

  • Design/calculation methods and engineering competencies
  • Manufacturing procedures, methods and work instructions
  • Quality, testing and inspection plans/records
  • Weld quality management system to EN 1090-1:2009+A1:2011
  • Weld procedures qualified to EN 1090-1:2009+A1:2011
  • Welder approval to EN 287
  • Welder operator approval to EN 1418
  • Competence of Welding Coordinator role
  • Welding qualifications to EN 5817 Quality Level C
